The Journey
Beyond the Gate
Being received into the Ancient Order of Free Gardeners is a transformative experience that marks the beginning of an initiatory journey. After each degree ceremony, new members enter a period of instruction and reflection, deepening their understanding of the teachings, customs, and principles of the Order. This phase allows initiates to bond with fellow members, forging connections that extend beyond the walls of the lodge.
While instruction is traditionally conducted within the lodge, the Ancient Order of Free Gardeners Research Society enriches this experience by offering virtual lectures and discussions, featuring esteemed speakers from around the world who share invaluable insights into the Order’s history and philosophy.

The First Step
Applying to the Ancient Order of Free Gardeners marks the beginning of a meaningful journey. Once you've learned about the Order and feel called to join, your application will be reviewed during a lodge meeting. The lodge may arrange a discussion to explore your interest further before voting on your membership. If approved, you will receive a formal invitation to take the 1st (Apprentice) Degree—the first step toward joining the Order. Though local lodges may elect to have annual lodge dues, there is no fee to join the Order. The only cost for new members is the required regalia, which may be ordered directly from a vendor as a group or single order.

What's Next?
The final step in joining the Ancient Order of Free Gardeners is marked by achieving the Master Gardener degree, which opens new paths for leadership and service within the lodge. Master Gardeners may choose to take on officer or committee roles, contributing to the governance and growth of their local lodge. After a year of dedicated membership, Master Gardeners become eligible for the 4th (Past Master) Degree, further deepening their connection to the Order.
With the full privileges of membership, a Master Gardener can request a commission from the Grand Lodge to establish a new lodge, provided they meet the requirements: one to form a lodge, four to hold a meeting, and eight to conduct admissions—ensuring the tradition and teachings of the Order continue to flourish.
"...God took the man and put him in the garden..."
