Origins of the Order

A Brief History of the Free Gardeners
The Ancient Order of Free Gardeners traces its origins to seventeenth-century Scotland, where working gardeners formed lodges to share knowledge, support one another, and cultivate both land and character.
According to the research of Robert L. D. Cooper, the earliest recorded lodge met in Haddington on August 16, 1676, though its traditions suggest an even older foundation.
Over time, the Order evolved from an operative craft into a speculative fraternity, welcoming men from all walks of life. The tools of gardening became symbols of personal growth—teaching patience, discipline, and the unseen development that precedes true progress.
By the twentieth century, social and economic changes led to the decline of the Order, and many lodges disappeared. By the mid-1900s, Free Gardening was nearly extinct.
The Modern Revival
In the early 2000s, a revival began in Scotland and Europe, led by enthusiasts and researchers seeking to preserve the traditions of the craft. In 2002, new efforts resulted in the re-establishment of lodges, including the formation of the Adelphi Bluebell Lodge No. 4, which became a focal point for restoring ritual, symbolism, and historical continuity.
These revived lodges did not seek centralized control, but instead followed the older tradition of independent lodges formed where needed, dedicated to research, preservation, and the renewal of Free Gardener teachings.
Today, the Ancient Order of Free Gardeners Inc. stands within this living revival—honoring the past while cultivating the future. The lesson remains unchanged:
"as a garden must be carefully cultivated, so too must the life of the individual."
